legends would have you believe giratina to be some sort of psychopathic sadist. a berserker with an insatiable need to cause violence. many of it's pokedex entries implying as much. however, this couldn't be farther from the truth.
[break][break]
in reality, giratina is a kind soul, and, having spent millennia in isolation, childish in many ways. it cares deeply for the world, and the creatures that inhabit it. though, it does have a wicked temper when it feels slighted, or threatened.

It is believed that Giratina was banished to the Distortion World as punishment for committing unspeakable violence in the Beginning. But that belief is fundamentally flawed, though expected. Hidden away on the Other Side as it is, there's little opportunity to learn about it, and it's motivations. What humans believe to be banishment, is truly just willing exile.
[break][break]
Giratina is the embodiment of antimatter. Its existence directly opposes that of Dialga and Palkia, and as such the trio can never exist on the same plane without drastic consequences. It only made sense for Giratina to remain in the Distortion World.
[break][break]
Despite willingly settling into its new world, Giratina was certainly jealous of its siblings at first. It didn't ask to be born the way it was, and they had done little to ease its situation. It took time, but after years of isolation, this bitterness slowly melted away as the Legendary Pokemon came to terms with its place in the world.
[break][break]
Discovering the ability to peer into the Old World certainly helped this process along. Through a connection to reflective surfaces (for that was what the Distortion World truly was, a reflection), Giratina was able to watch as if the world were just some cosmic television show.
[break][break]
Unfortunately, not all pictures were clear, and the pictures that came through were, on occasion, distorted. Whether due to the quality of the object (a mirror gives a better picture than a metal pot) or gaps created when whatever it focused on moved to an area without any reflective surfaces.
[break][break]
Rarely did the distorted nature of Giratina's "shows" matter. It had resigned itself to the fact that it would never be able to visit the Old World. There was no need to understand it accurately. The stories it saw entertained it, and that was all that mattered.
[break][break]
At least, until the Old World started to bleed over into the Distortion World. In a rare event, two little humans found themselves in the Distortion World. This, unsurprisingly, piqued Giratina's attention, though try as it might, the Legendary Pokemon was never quite able to catch the pair to investigate further.
[break][break]
With its focus turned to the humans that had invaded its world, Giratina was unaware of the events that transpired in the Other World. It was unaware of Team Glactic's meddling, how they intentionally enraged its siblings. By the time it was aware of any disturbance, all Giratina knew was that Dialga and Palkia's squabbling was tearing a hole into its world. Believing this to be connected to the sudden appearance of the two humans, millennia of pent up emotions imploded inside the Legendary.
[break][break]
After keeping up its end of the bargain, it didn't deserve such a flippant disregard for its peace was unforgivable. If they wouldn't respect its world, then there was no reason to respect their agreement. So, Giratina pulled the two (and an unintended third) into its world and trapped them there. In its rage, Giratina at least had the presence of mind to keep the balance in check.
[break][break]
Giratina's first stop was Eterna City in order to destroy the statue of its siblings. Once there, it began to wander the city. It caused destruction with every step, but in its rage it didn't fully comprehend the repercussions of its actions. The only thing on its mind was exploring, and experiencing the Old World in all its glory.
[break][break]
The trip was cut short by the interference of several humans alongside Regigigas, and Heatran. In the heat of the battle, one of the humans, a young boy was injured during one of Giratina's attacks. The sight of the boy gave it pause, but before the fog of rage could completely disperse, Regigigas attacked, and Giratina fled back to the Distortion World.
[break][break]
Upon its return, the conflict truly reached a head. Humans, and Pokemon, both Legendary and common, flooded its dimension. A monumental battle occurred which inevitably resulted in Giratina's defeat. In its defeat, it finally gained a full understanding of the situation, and was given the time to calm down. Like it had in the Beginning, Giratina willingly returned to its home in the Distortion World.
[break][break]
Those brief few tastes of the Old World changed the Legendary Dragon, however. Before, it had never truly had the chance to experience it, and therefore there was nothing truly to envy or miss about it. Having tasted the air, and felt the warmth of the sun, though, it desired more of it. Giratina felt an ache that it had never felt before. But it knew life in the Old World could never be its so long as its siblings resided there, and convincing the sun to stop shining would be far easier than convincing them to both allow Giratina precious few moments to visit. Even if it were possible, certainly visits would only make the ache greater once it returned to the Distortion World.
[break][break]
There was no way for Giratina to win. Or was there?
[break][break]
Somehow, Reshiram found a way to inhabit a human body. At first, Giratina could hardly believe it, and thought maybe it was just another distortion caused by the link between the two worlds, but no. It was truly real, and it presented an opportunity. Surely, a human vessel would be able to mitigate the side effects that its forms usually caused when it traveled to the Old World.
[break][break]
As soon as Giratina was able, it contacted the Vast White pokemon, and (somewhat forcefully) gathered the information required to replicate the process, and wasted very little time finding a suitable host; the heir to a vast fortune which would allow Giratina to freely move about with little worry for the mortals arbitrary use of currency.
[break][break]
To anyone who understood Giratina, it would be no surprise that it (he as the humans now called it based on the vessel it took) quickly found his way to the region of Alola. There he met his two companions, Puka, and Kommo-o.
[break][break]
Puka, he met trying (and failing) to win the affections of humans. Giratina pitied the poor creature, and happily invited it to come along with him on his adventure. Consistent company was greatly appreciated after his isolation, and while humans were nice, they couldn't quite understand him like another pokemon. Especially one as shunned as the poor Mimikyu.
[break][break]
Giratina ran into Kommo-o in the mountains as it was returning to it's birthplace. The scaly pokemon, recognizing the power that slumbered deep within his vessel, became instantly aggressive, and attempted to challenge the legendary pokemon to a duel. However, Giratina shed most, if not all of his power in order to reside in his current vessel. So, Kommo-o resolved to travel with the legendary in the hopes that, in time, he would be able to fight Giratina in all its glory.
[break][break]
Eventually, the legendary's travels brought it to Lyeant. Kommo-o desired battle, and Giratina, despite the destruction it caused during its last jaunt in the Old World, didn't wish to see the humans hurting.
[break][break]
Since their arrival, the trio has done what they can to aid the people of Lyrent, though Giratina's continued interest in experiencing all that the Old World has to offer has, more than once, sent them on a detour chasing after some new food or object.
