Derek and the rest of his immediate family had called Blackthorn City their home, although in fact his parents had moved there from the Kalos region mere months before Derek was to be born. After a pair of incidents resulting in the full-body paralysis of his father and the death of his sister later on into his childhood and teenage life, Derek decided to leave his home region and train abroad in order to widen his perspective on the world of Pokemon, as well as the humans trying to employ them in everyday life. In other words, he was trying to cope.

Given that a significant portion of his family have been subject to the wrath of feral Pokemon, Derek demonstrated insensitive Pokemon capturing methods for quite some time until he realized it wasn't necessary to knock them out all the time. That he could simply persuade Pokemon to partake on his journey. Before then, Derek's "wild battle" etiquette was considerably overkill, and had actually resulted in the deaths of wild Pokemon before, though it is by no means commonplace (or on purpose). He can count the number of Pokemon he's killed on one hand, and has been training with his Pokemon daily for over fifteen years. At the very least he's made a genuine attempt at handling battles with wild Pokemon more civilly, though his nervousness/paranoia make it difficult not to overestimate.

Derek always came off as a competitive trainer. Aspiring to acquire as many Gym Badges as possible, he has so far collected a total of seven badges from Johto, Kanto and Hoenn region combined. He's only recently arrived in Lyeant, though intends to challenge any and every Gym Leader who doesn't boast a range of Dragon type Pokemon. Reason being that Derek has had uncomfortable encounters with wild Dragon Pokemon in every region he's been to, and has in essence developed "Dracophobia" (Fear of Dragons) due to his father's paralysis also being the result of an attack by a Dragon Pokemon.

In order to attempt working over his immense fear for such Pocket "Monsters", Derek traded a fellow trainer for their Deino back on the ship headed out of Hoenn region. Since arriving in Lyeant, he's managed to help it evolve into it's second stage of evolution (Zweilous). Derek still isn't sure what to name them, especially now that they've got another head chomping about, and finds it difficult to get them to listen outside of battle because of it. Worse yet, he's had to stop them from eating wild Pokemon they've defeated, causing him to worry about using them in Gym/Trainer battles.

On top of this making him feel incompetent and insecure as a trainer, Derek is not convinced where he should sit on the matters concerning Pokemon in Lyeant, and the many organizations at the heart of their current/past conflict - including the one he is a member of (The Association). The trainer feels he hasn't been in the region long enough to be able to make any kind of judgment calls, though still wishes he could do something for the better of Lyeant. His helplessness hurts him to this very day, causing Derek to behave more irrationally than usual here in Lyeant.

Derek is your typical Trainer with an upbringing he's decided to leave behind in order to pursue enlightenment in this dire world. He is a conscientious individual who struggles to do the right thing, prone to vindictive fits of hostility and rage when Derek or his Pokemon are wronged or hurt. Likewise, he's unsure if his opinion on Lyeant's political problems matter to anyone who has suffered/witnessed their past first-hand, making for some slight insecurity as a Trainer trying to "make it big" in yet another region. He's looking to learn from these people who've suffered the same as him, if not worse, in order to reinforce a more constructive outlook on life alongside Pokemon as they know it. What could possibly go wrong...

If there is something out there for Derek to despise, it is the organizations trying to spread the influence of their authority or "control". As such, Parallax (And perhaps even the Republic) are prime candidates for the type of people who will warrant conflict on his part. Sometimes even those like him, who are part of the Pokemon Association will find hostility or contempt from Derek, should they prove themselves malicious, selfish, tyrannical, etc.
