athalia was born into a small, wealthy family - just her, her father, her mother, and business. the schwarz family was of a high rank on the social ladder, generally, and even before the blue-haired girl was born, her close family was never without sufficient funds. however, the price of being so wealthy was a lot of time and effort. there was so little time for her parents to spend with their daughter, especially one who was so young and required so much attention, so from a very young age, the girl was juggled around family members and family friends. she would see very little of her parents for the remainder of her life.[break][break]

when she was five, just starting school, it was arranged that she would be taken care of by her grandparents, grandpapie and grandma-ma schwarz. as opposed to the penthouse suite her parents lived in, and the many high-end homes her relatives owned, her grandparents took pleasure in living a small, humble life. the home had what they needed, a couple comforts, and they were content with that. so, despite being born into an incredibly rich family, the girl was not raised as the "rich girl" you would have imagined. her grandparents were incredibly religious - her grandfather being the paster of the local church of arceus there in irisia city - and she took great pleasure in learning about said religion, as well as participating in worship with her relatives. for nine years, she lived a blissful life with two of the best guardians a girl could ever have and enjoyed the simple things that were provided, not the add-ons only money could buy.[break][break]

when her parents discovered that she'd taken such an interest in religion, however, they were furious. intolerant atheists - there were no "legendary pokemon", makers and upholders of the universe or no - they spat at the idea that their only child had been "brain washed" with such "garbage" and had her pulled away from that home environment immediately. they enlisted her into boarding school, away from any and all relatives, and prayed that peer pressure would sweep her beliefs under the rug. and it worked - to a point. the future-gym leader was furious with her parents for taking away her near-perfect life, and oppression was hard to escape from less-than-tolerant classmates and teachers. the only friend she managed to make there was a boy who believed in much the same things as she, and also faced as terrible treatment from their peers. while his presence, support, and advice helped to keep her relatively sane for a few years, bloody rage was setting in swiftly, and she found herself slipping further and further away from "the will of arceus". it just kept escalating and escalating until -[break][break]

- at the end of her senior year, upon returning home for the first time since she was five -[break][break]

- she beat mr. and mrs. schwarz to death with a baseball bat.[break][break]

ally's friend was mortified, claiming that she'd let herself fall away from arceus and that this was the fate of all those who strayed. he refused to associate with a stray, a murderer anymore, but helped her to cover her tracks before bidding her farewell forever. horrified by her own actions and the loss of her only real friend, athalia realized that the only way to get better would be to bury herself in piety once more. fleeing to inferia town, she helped to establish a church of arceus there in town; proving to be a capable trainer, as well, she became the town's normal-type gym leader within two years of residency there.
