[attr="class","tbeapponebio2"]
She was always one step ahead of me. No matter how much or how hard I practiced she always managed to be better. Her name was Valeriya Yuna. My rival in the world of figure skating even thought I had no right to call her that. Each jump that she made was perfectly timed so she could land it with ease and even in time with the music. No matter what she did, Valeriya's movements were as close to perfection on the ice as a living being could get. [break][break]
The Queen of Jumps. Naturally there was a reason that people called her that. Her figure was perfect and each jump she landed was amazing... it always makes me wonder why someone like Valeriya chose someone like me to be her rival. My technique was nowhere near hers and the only reason I had started to skate was because my mother had forced me to. She said that 'I should use my talent and influence to achieve something'. It hadn't even been my own decision. The person who raised me forced me to start skating and yet I forced myself to start enjoying it.[break][break]
As I watched her perform a famous Triple Axel, I remembered that it was the girl skating at that moment who had taught me to enjoy skating. She had given me a reason to continue, to strive for more each time I went out on the ice. Valeriya doesn't know this, I'm sure. But when I first saw her skate at that Seniors... she took my breath away. Then and there on that day I decided that I wanted to come out on top each and every time the two of us would reach the next round. Defeat her with the skills that I had not because my mother told me to, but just to prove to myself I could. For myself. I finally decided that it was what I needed.[break][break]
The next time I open my eyes, her scores are being announced. That was what I had to beat so I skated out onto the ice with my head held high only to make eye contact with Valeriya. She looked so confident with her performance... and had every right to. It was flawless as always. But this time it wouldn't be her standing at the top.[break][break]
It was going to be me.[break][break]
Skating to Fall for You by Secondhand Serenade[break][break]
This song was completely different from the one that my rival had skated to just previously but I wasn't going to let that stop me. Songs like this one are the kind that I can truly skate to. My coach knew from the beginning that I would be difficult to teach routines as I simply listened to the music and skated the way that the music said. However due to regulations we had organized for me to perform certain tricks and I should be fine as long as I just remember.[break][break]
I skated out onto the ice in my beautiful orange apparel that undoubtedly clashed with my turquoise hair but it's the one that I had decided on. The risks were high, but I wanted to wear something that reflected my passion and desire to win. Today my hair was in a simple side ponytail but it worked well with the somewhat girly outfit I was wearing even if it wasn't my usual style. This time I was going to at least try and break my old habits especially considering my normal attire was ladylike and sophisticated.[break][break]
When the music started I let it fill me so I could move to it in perfect timing. Usually my mind was clear of any thoughts but this time was.... different. For some reason I thought of my home at Anistar City within the Kalos region that was so very far away now. My mother would always force me to skate even if I had injured myself. I had to stay away from everyone... human or Pokemon. There was no such thing as friendship in the world of Figure Skating. All I had was my skill and enemies. That is until I met Niji.[break][break]
My skates hit the ground after performing a double loop and I could feel that I was unbalanced when I landed. But after all these years I had learned to compensate for my weakness. I didn't have a choice. But Niji taught me to embrace what weaknesses I did have... especially after watching her swim. Niji was a Feebas at the time and was visually ugly to many however the way she swam possessed a beauty and grace that I could never forget. That I would never want to. Despite the fact that the weather was much colder she continued to swim to the best of her ability.. inspiring me to do the same with my skating. Niji became my first friend... but there was always something missing.[break][break]
For some reason I needed to stay on par with Val. So I attempted a Triple Lultz next and to my amazement, landed it. No perfectly, but well enough that I could easily compensate. I could remember when we had both come up against each other during a certain season and I ended up getting furious at the fact I had come out on top. Val's defeat... I wouldn't accept it. I still saw her as so many levels above me and she pushed me to even greater heights and yet I didn't want to beat her. Not like that. Not because of a single mistake.[break][break]
I fell. My thoughts were too far away and I landed incorrectly from a Double Axel. The pain shot straight up my leg and I knew that I had twisted my ankle... Val was going to kill me. I knew that she was going to take first place now and... and mother would lecture me. She would force me to work even harder just to win... and I knew that Ruu would defend me. Force mother to stop. Especially since when we first met he had paralyzed my mother with a Thunder Wave just to get me a rest.[break][break]
But I managed to get back up. After waiting for a certain point in the music I began skating again. Something like this... I wouldn't let it stop me. Especially since I wouldn't make it an easy match for Val despite my stumble... Unfortunately I knew that the song was almost over. I squeezed in a few more techniques before the performance was over and I began to skate off the rink. My loss was inevitable and as soon as I left the pain returned and I needed the wall to support me. This wouldn't be a permanent victory for my rival... I wouldn't let it be.
