It should also be said that Wren is not a quitter - she doesn't give up, even when she's beaten down and left with little choice. Maybe that's why she likes battling so much... in any case, Wren is a fierce fighter - one who should not be messed with lightly.

The news didn't really sink in at first.
[break][break]
It wasn't until Wren attended their funeral that she realized that she would never be able to see Mom or Dad again.
[break][break]
She screamed and kicked and tried to get the people to stop lowering their coffins into the ground because her parents are still inside, let them out please let them out.
[break][break]
Mamo had to take her away, had to escort her out of the grim service and sit her down outside so she couldn't see any more tragedy. Wren sniffled until tears started streaming down her face and she curled up into ball.
[break][break]
"Why did they have to go, Mamo?"
[break][break]
Big, warm arms encircled her, held her close to him, as he heaved a long, sad sigh.
[break][break]
"I wish I knew."
[break][break]
"... I miss them."
[break][break]
There was a bout of silence between them, punctuated with quiet sniffles and the occasional broken sob.
[break][break]
And then, Mamo finally said, "Me too." And he absentmindedly ran his hand through Wren's hair, a repeating motion that lulled her into a stillness she'd never known until that point.
[break][break]
"What's gonna happen now?" She asked, after a quiet moment that felt like it stretched forever.
[break][break]
The hand in her hair paused. He shifted Wren so he held her closer as his steady heartbeat thumped against her ear.
[break][break]
"I don't know."
Living with hr aunt and uncle wasn't easy.
[break][break]
They didn't like how she kept tracking in mud from her "ill-concieved misadventures" (really, they should stop using big words to intimidate her), how she had a wild air to her as she flitted about the house looking for the next thing to sate her curiosity, how she was not demure and meek like a proper lady. They tried to straighten her out with scoldings, punishments, and discipline. But no matter what they tried, Wren just couldn't be tied down for too long.
[break][break]
So they sat her down one day after she'd absentmindedly tracked mud into the house for the nth time.
[break][break]
"Wren... I think we need to talk."
[break][break]
She had an inkling what her aunt and uncle would say to her. Wren looked down and picked at her fingernails.
[break][break]
"Your father's friend is coming to visit us today to pick you up. You like him, right?"
[break][break]
Wren looked up again, her eyes glittering with excitement as her whole being seemed to brighten up.
[break][break]
"Yeah, yeah! Is Mamo coming to pick us up for a trip?"
[break][break]
Her aunt and uncle shared a strange look between them before her aunt leaned over to gently grasp one of Wren's hands. Immediately, confusion extinguished her sudden burst of energy. Her brow furrowed as she stared at her aunt and uncle imploringly as scenario after horrid scenario ran through her head.
[break][break]
"Is he?" She asked again in a weaker voice, doubt and dread plaguing her in equal amounts.
[break][break]
"No. He's coming to pick you up. We... we can't take care of you anymore."
It was when Wren was far enough that she couldn't see the house that she feebly gripped the edge of Mamo's shirt and tried not to cry.
[break][break]
"Do they hate me?" She asked.
[break][break]
In reply, Mamo scooped her up in his arms, huffed amusedly at her tiny yelp, and kissed her forehead. "No, but I'll look after you. I will never abandon you."
[break][break]
Wren broke out into a grateful grin and threw her arms around his neck.
[break][break]
Mamo held her securely in one arm as he shifted their bags on his shoulders.
[break][break]
"You're safe with me, don't worry."
The two of them, Mamo and Wren, stayed up in Mount Silver for a while. Mamo said that he wanted some time to get away from people for a while. In a sense, Wren understood the feeling. Of course, Mamo kept them safe and warm and fed while they lived at the top of the mountain. It was no place to raise a kid but neither of them really minded the cold nor the occasional wild Pokémon that would try to steal their food. Wren learned a lot about Pokémon and battling, since a bunch of people heard about Mamo and climbed up the mountain to challenge him to a battle for some reason.
[break][break]
And she learned that Mamo was really, really good at battling.
[break][break]
She sat at the sidelines and watched as each challenger walked away with the taste of bitter defeat while Mamo tended to his Pokémon. During downtimes between challengers, Wren often played with his gargantuan Pokémon (she sensed a few similarities between Mamo and his Pokémon in terms of size and general disposition) and they let her with no complaints. It slowly dawned on her that she wanted to be as strong and kind as Mamo.
[break][break]
"... Papa."
[break][break]
Mamo froze in the middle of prepping dinner (vegetable broth with tamato berries).
[break][break]
"... Yes, Wren?"
[break][break]
"I just wanted to say it because you're my papa now." Wren smiled and went back to climb on top of Metagross. It wasn't long until she chirped up again. "Hey papa?"
[break][break]
Mamo answered dutifully, keeping his eyes on the broth so it wouldn't mysteriously spill again. "Mmhm?"
[break][break]
"I wanna be as cool as you one day, papa."
"Papa."
[break][break]
Her voice trembled.
[break][break]
Mamo held her close, running his hand through her hair to soothe her, as he held the phone to his ear with his free hand and a dark look to his eyes.
[break][break]
"We have to go. We have to go see Jericho."
[break][break]
He paused. Then he muttered a few more things over the phone before hanging up.
[break][break]
"Let's not waste anymore time."
[break][break]
Wren trembled, fearful that she might have to attend yet another funeral and watch helplessly as they lowered another coffin with someone she loved into the ground.
[break][break]
But once she sat by Jericho's bedside with Mamo watching over the two of them, she couldn't help but bawl when Jericho opened his eyes. She held his hand tight and wouldn't let go for a long, long while. Wren was grateful to whatever gods who listened to prayers that she hadn't lost another one.
They finally settled back down in Lyeant after that.
[break][break]
Mamo and Wren lived peacefully in a quiet little neighborhood that was still close enough to nature. asked Mamo to give her a ride whenever Wren met up with her siblings and cousin.
[break][break]
She liked staying at home with Mamo and studying there. It felt peaceful, safe, warm. The kids at the nearby school were kind of mean and didn't want to do anything with the mountain girl. Wren didn't want to do anything with the kids there either.
[break][break]
If she were a little more honest with herself, Wren was kind of lonely without friends.
She blinked as she stared down at the Pokémon egg in her small hands. Then she glanced back up to Mamo with a raised, questioning eyebrow.
[break][break]
His eyes sparkled good-humoredly at her as a vague answer.
[break][break]
"Take good care of it. If you carry that egg with you long enough, it'll hatch."
[break][break]
"Papa, this is the weirdest birthday present you've given me ever. I'll let it slide though." Wren narrowed her eyes at him. "But it better not be a Magikarp or anything."
[break][break]
"Magikarp evolves into Gyarados, little bird. Every Pokémon has a hidden strength." He replied, his mouth slanting up into a lopsided, amused grin.
[break][break]
Wren grumbled something unintelligible and continued to stare at the egg. Then, a slow, wide smile tugged at the corners of her lips. "I can't wait to meet my first Pokémon."
[break][break]
Mamo ruffled her hair affectionately, ignoring her squawks of protest.
She bounced lightly in place as she knocked on the gym's doors.
[break][break]
"Je, hurry up and open the door! You promised me free breakfast!"
[break][break]
There was muffled scuffling until a familiar face peeks out of a crack in the door. "... Oh, Red. It's you."
[break][break]
"Red" crossed her arms and huffed.
[break][break]
"That's Wren to you, knucklehead."
The news didn't really sink in at first.
