we were the kings and queens of promise
A fine afternoon it was -- late afternoon at that; the previous evening, she had returned home from being on duty all day long. It was fairly uneventful except for the couple instances she had to ask if a pair of arguing citizens were going to be okay (and a fight wasn't about to break out). She was aware of the higher levels of tension around the densely populated parts of the city. Even if it was not an argument between the three apparent rival factions becoming more well known throughout the entire region by the week, folks who called Eirenhyre City their home and the Pokemon League their allies still found reason to quarrel about the state of things.
Politics. She wasn't the sort of hipster teen who stuck up their nose at the word and shut down anyone who brought it up, but at the same time, Elise associated it with a bitter connotation. There was reason enough for people to get along and be fair to one another, so, she thought, why couldn't they just do the right thing? A silly question. They cannot be trusted to be kind and gentle to one another as would be best. That was certainly the reason why the enforcement of law and order was required. Not to rule over the people, but to make things right when their innate flaws threatened to destroy the peace and safety of one another. To Elise personally however, it wasn't about some wild ideal of making people realize how flawed they were so that they might magically seek repentance, but simply doing what was right, protecting the innocent from the destructors that mean them harm. In that aspect, perhaps Elise was a bit idealistic, for as much as she tried to make herself out not to be to everyone else.
She had rested all day since this morning, only going out to grab a cup of tea for breakfast, giving her salutations to all who offered them to her presence first. When one lives in just one city for long enough, the other long-term civilians begin to recognize your face. This was heavily compounded upon by the fact that she once held a highly esteemed position among the Elite Four, becoming known by young and aged pokemon trainers and citizens all over the region, if only for a brief moment of time. People still asked her about it, and she still had not much more than a vague answer for it.
Elise's white-painted house with navy blue roofing was fairly humble for someone of her status. It wasn't tiny, but it wasn't heavily reflective of the highest rank she held in her life either. Two floors, a basement, and enough space that maybe her pokemon team wouldn't all feel squished even when all out and moving about at once. Well, the cat pokemon all slept in the same sunbeam all day long. And the sword pokemon, having no muscles to exercise in order to find fulfillment in life, was still as a rock, sitting in its usual place against the wall of the main living room unless provoked. It was the manectric who loved to make the maximum use of the space in the house, sprinting from room to room on a daily basis because it literally could not stop producing energy within itself, no matter how much exercise it got from chasing after speeders and criminals with Elise at her work. Elise allowed it to go outside in the backyard as often as she could, although it wanted to play with the rapidash who did not want to play, but instead preferred to graze in peace. Elise decided that she might have to take her team out to some high level, dangerous area with wild pokemon to have them train while simultaneously letting off some steam. There were significantly less "challengers" in Elise's current work than there were when she was a member of the Elite Four after all. And as always, Elise felt it wouldn't be fair for her to challenge the league anymore.
So came the sudden knock thrice at her front door as she returned from letting the electric canine outside in the back yard to play and was beginning to think about either preparing for dinner for herself and her pokemon or decide on where to eat out. Elise blinked in wonder for a brief second or two, unable to guess who could be requesting her attention, so in-person instead of the normal methods of sending a message digitally to her pokenav in the event of an important piece of news needing her to know of it at once. And considering all of the higher ups within the Pokemon League basically had her number written down somewhere important, Elise had reason to suspect that it may not be any one of them. Normally it was their style to summon her to them, not go to her. She could faintly hear her manectric borking away, having noticed the visitors in front of her house very soon after, although her home's high tech sound-proofing walls kept it from being disrupting to anyone within the house. So who ever it was would be revealed only once the door was opened for personal investigation. Elise would not keep them waiting, even though she, having spent all morning hanging around her house like an old man (sometimes she had to deny the thought that she was acting like one, perhaps due to her situation of surrounding herself with other retiree's), was dressed like she was more comfy, sweatpants, jacket and all, than ready to purposely reveal herself in public, and her hair wasn't even done up yet.
"..." Elise revealed her visitor without comment, and the silence extended into a blank as far too many emotions to comprehend flooded her mind.
“Long time, no see, Ely. Guess who's finally back in town?”
What ever does that mean? Elise's arms were thrown around the visitor's lean frame before she could even muse over that thought. She didn't care that a few curious onlookers were witnessing this sight at Elise's front door. Of course, she couldn't even hold back the extremely rare occasion that tears formed in her eyes, not visible to Luca from this angle she was embracing her dearest friend. "I... I thought I'd never see you again. But still I wished ever since that I could find you some day...!" Elise finally choked out after a moment of holding Luca tightly, like a treasure that she'd been dying to hold all her life, literally, as if afraid that the precious thing she held would vanish due to the unlikelihood of it ever appearing to her in the first place.
Elise finally released Luca from her embrace and began to wipe her eyes. Now that she was calm again, she could finally study how much Luca had changed since so long ago, back to those memories that Elise held tightly to her mind. Indeed, Luca looked like she had matured, and matured so very beautifully. It threatened to take Elise's breath away again. Just.... Wow. She suddenly hoped she hadn't like, smudged any makeup, how very embarrassing that would be and make their reunion. "Ah, my apologies for doing that so suddenly! Elise formally apologized on the chance that Luca hadn't been expecting or prepared for getting hugged like that. "It's been far too long. Do come on in and make yourself at home! Will you be here from now on?" Where have you been all this time? she wanted to ask. She had so many questions she wanted to ask, but she knew she had to hold herself back and give Luca the patience and respect she deserved. Though it hurt inside to consider it, Elise knew she had to prepare for the likelihood that time in all its cruel length might have changed Luca to where she wasn't someone Elise could speak casually to like before.
