There is a part of you that you must never forsake, that you will never forsake. Remember? Of course you do. You have never forgotten it, nor shall you ever.[break][break]

Yours was an evergreen demesne, free of hurt or woe, an ark of wonder adrift a sea of boyish imagination, teeming with adventure, with things unknown and unnamed. Its people were a fey folk, clad in lustrous greenery and ambrosial blooms. They took you for their lord and prince, and they loved and watched over you, and set a crown of petals upon your small brow. Faithful knights and servants all, how many a time did they entertain your fleeting whims or wound the day’s illusory foe? How often did they comfort you in Mother and Father’s stead? Even now, blurred yet vivid memories—like painted glass—of naps under speckled shade serve to comfort you: floral aromas that soothed you to slumber; swaddling, leafy embraces that staved off all ills; maternal caresses given by faerie hands, non-human, belonging to dryads and nymphs.[break][break]

In time you would regard them by another name, Pokémon. They accompanied you where your parents could not tread, into the nooks and crannies of the world, where small wonders lurked. From nearby woods and meadows to the respectably-sized gardens and vineyards of the family estate, life seemed boundless, vast and infinite. It was an idyllic time; you truly thought yourself fleet-footed enough to evade time’s withering grasp, no matter where its terrifying presence should manifest, if only for but a little while.[break][break]

But something else inevitably caught you, entranced your very soul, and made you look away from the comforting warmth of home with its melodious sound. At first it came to you as but a mere whisper, soft and vague; Mother would chide whenever she chanced to catch you in these spells of distraction: when you might stop, stock-still, and glance away from a task or game, from your studying, and set your sight upon the distant horizon, gazing at something beyond it. Ever and anon, as the seasons passed, and repeated, the voice grew louder, clearer, such that it could neither be ignored nor doubted any longer. And then you realized: you knew this voice, had known it since you could remember.[break][break]

It was the siren call of adventure, true adventure. Just like in Mother’s stories.[break][break]

You journeyed afar from home’s sheltering nest to regions unknown; and there you beheld splendors vast and horrors deep. How majestically wondrous and terrifying the world proved, indeed. It contained such strange, thought-provoking and fascinating people and creatures alike, all of varying hue and shape, with individual stories and lessons to impart if one held an open mind and kept wide an observant eye and ear.[break][break]

You never lacked for inspiration.[break][break]

You often read on your travels; Mother had undoubtedly nurtured that seedling of character within you from a young age. It now manifested most especially as a glowing love for poetry. Stiflingly shy as a child, you found a power and confidence in the beauty of words—how they could transform the simple into the complex, paint the world in kaleidoscopic colors, uplift and embolden spirits—and their ability to articulate your thoughts.[break][break]

As you meandered through time’s eternal current, slowly but surely you grew into the form and mind of a young man. Renown, whatever measure of it, likewise came to you as you proved yourself to be quite the competent Grass-type specialist, to say the least. Rarely stopping, you proceeded further through the devious winding of a labyrinth’s worth of trials and tribulations: Gym Battles that sorely tested one’s mettle and worth; the hard-won friendship and trust of strange, new Pokémon; inklings of love and affection, the keen sting of loss and betrayal; even the occasional League Tournament, that plateau to which countless Trainers aspire.[break][break]

Then it happened.[break][break]

One fateful day, from afar, you watched, helpless, as Lyeant was irrevocably scarred.[break][break]

You could never truly return, you later thought, to your home, to your birthplace. Some part of it had been forever tarnished. Is that what it meant, as others often told you, to “grow up”?[break][break]

But you could never abandon her, would never abandon her; of course you came back to her. Lyeant was as much a mother (or aunt, perhaps) to you as any flesh and blood.[break][break]

Yet much had been lost.[break][break]

The Pokémon Association sought new talent. Astoundingly, they approached you, you, offering a position within that fabled quartet whose uttered name made the blood of Trainers quicken the world over: the Elite Four. You were to be the first gate and hurdle to challengers; you were to be, arguably, their first face and impression of the League itself, the one to administer a baptism by fire. It seemed beyond dreaming, unimaginable. But you held a boundless imagination—always had, always would.[break][break]

Perhaps you were stronger than you ever thought yourself to be.[break][break]

Gazing at the yawning horizon once more, you now listen again for that sublime noise, for that siren call from some fey realm, beckoning you… beckoning you.[break][break]
